Cass County MI-VINE Coverage

VINELink delivers MI-VINE, Michigan’s free and confidential custody and court notification service. Cass County’s official Corrections page sends its “Inmate Status” link to VINELink. That choice makes MI-VINE the local public status layer for the Cass County Jail. State materials also describe county jail and Michigan Department of Corrections participation, so the reporting-agency name must be read along with the result.

A Cass County Jail record concerns the county booking episode. An MDOC record concerns state prison or supervision. One person may appear in both systems in sequence if the jail transfers the person to MDOC. The county record can close as a transfer while a state record opens as a prisoner. Later, OTIS may show the person as a parolee after prison departure. MI-VINE does not supply a universal statement that the person is free from every authority.

Search Cass County MI-VINE Records

Search while the person is still reported in custody if the main goal is a future alert. Begin with the state and correct search type, then match more than the name. Common names, spelling variants, and records from several agencies can otherwise produce the wrong result. A known booking or offender identifier is useful, but the interface and available fields depend on the provider’s current feed.

1. Open VINELink and choose Michigan.
2. Select the offender or custody search rather than a general resource search.
3. Enter the full name or a known booking or offender identifier. Try careful name variants only when needed.
4. Compare the available identifiers before opening a match. Do not rely on name alone.
5. Read the reporting agency, current custody status, location, and exact event wording.
6. Record the status phrase and observation time, then confirm the event through the Sheriff, court, or OTIS as appropriate.

A negative result is not a release finding. The name may differ, the provider may have updated or aged out a record, or the person may be in a system outside VINE’s scope. For a broader search and formal record path, use the Cass County released inmates lookup. That process follows the last known custody system rather than treating one search result as final.

Cass County VINELink Result Fields

MI-VINE’s live interface and provider feeds can change. The precise capitalization and visible field set may vary, so the table describes the supported meaning rather than promising a fixed screen. The agency line gives the needed context. A Cass County Jail result and an MDOC result can refer to the same person but different custody episodes.

VINE is built for timely information. It is not designed as a permanent Cass County release archive. A released result may not stay searchable forever, and the county publishes no VINE retention promise for former bookings. Save the status wording and time observed, then obtain the originating record when the exact date, reason, or destination matters.

Cass MI-VINE Event Labels

Cass County’s use of MI-VINE instead of a separate roster makes the event label especially important. Michigan materials distinguish release, bond release, court-order discharge, transfer, and escape notifications. Those terms are not interchangeable. “Released” or “out of custody” means the provider stopped reporting confinement for that episode. It does not prove that every jurisdiction released the person or identify the legal reason unless that information is displayed.

Bond release

The person leaves jail under court terms while the criminal case remains pending.

Court-order discharge

A court action authorizes an end to that custody episode, subject to processing and other holds.

Transfer

The sending facility’s custody ends while another agency likely continues confinement.

Escape

An unauthorized departure, not a lawful community release.

Parole

Physical departure from state prison into MDOC community supervision, not final sentence discharge.

When MI-VINE reports a transfer from Cass County Jail, request the Sheriff release disposition and receiving agency. Then change systems. Use OTIS for a supported MDOC transfer. Use another jail’s official route for a county transfer. Federal and immigration locators belong only when the record identifies that receiving authority.

Register Cass County Release Alerts

Registration works best from the matching in-custody record. If the provider has already closed that booking, there may be no future event on which to register. Use a phone number, email address, or text destination that the registrant controls. Michigan describes registration as confidential, but contact details should still be entered and maintained with care.

1. Open the verified in-custody record and choose the available register or notify option.
2. Select phone, email, text, or an in-app method where the current interface offers it.
3. Enter the contact destination and complete the verification prompts.
4. Create a four-digit PIN for voice calls.
5. When a call arrives, listen to the event and enter the PIN followed by the number sign to acknowledge it.
6. Update the registration if the contact method changes and keep a separate official verification route.

The official Michigan brochure says the voice PIN acknowledges a call and stops repeat calls for that event. Email and text notifications do not use that PIN. The state-program contact is 800-770-7657, with TTY at 866-847-1298. The national VINELink service center lists 866-277-7477 for platform help. These numbers serve different roles.

Note: No alert method guarantees that every provider event will be error-free or instant, so keep agency contact details available.

Verify Cass County VINELink Releases

Choose the corroborating source by event. For a Cass County Jail release, call the jail at 269-445-1209 or request the Sheriff booking and release entry. The record can supply a door-out time, recorded disposition, and receiving agency where available. The Cass court file can explain bond, dismissal, sentence, or commitment authority, but it may not show when staff physically completed release.

For an MDOC event, use the Offender Tracking Information System. OTIS covers current prisoners, parolees, probationers, and people discharged from MDOC supervision during its public three-year display period. “Prisoner” means state confinement continues. “Parolee” supports prison departure under supervision. “Discharged” indicates MDOC supervision ended. OTIS does not cover a person whose only custody was a county-jail sentence.

If MI-VINE and the originating record disagree, keep both observations instead of choosing the newer-looking screen by default. A provider update can lag the underlying jail action, and a court entry may precede physical processing. For a Cass County Jail event, ask the Sheriff for the existing booking and release entries tied to that episode. Include the full name, date of birth, booking number when known, and a narrow date range. Request the release time, disposition, and destination or receiving agency. That combination can distinguish a community departure from a handoff that merely closed the Cass record.

State-corrections discrepancies require a different route. MDOC directs factual OTIS correction questions to correctionsinfo@michigan.gov, while a supervision-location issue can be taken to the relevant parole or probation office. The Cass County Parole/Probation Office is the local Region 8 field office, but it is not the keeper of Cass County Jail logs. Keeping county and state custodians separate avoids asking one office to certify another system’s event.

Cass County VINELink Limits

VINELink does not replace the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator, federal court records, or an appropriate U.S. Marshals district inquiry. It also should not be used to infer federal custody from a missing Cass result. The BOP locator applies to federal sentences. Pretrial Marshals custody has no comparable nationwide public name-search tool. Use those channels only when a court record or receiving-agency entry supports the federal path.

Immigration custody is also separate. ICE’s locator is appropriate after a documented immigration transfer, not as a speculative follow-up to a blank VINE search. A release from Cass County to ICE is a transfer across systems and does not mean release into the community. No official source reviewed identifies a federal prison or ICE-contract detention facility in Cass County.

MI-VINE alerts should be paired with the source record when the details matter. For county custody, that is the Sheriff release log. For state custody, that is OTIS or an MDOC record. For the legal authority, use the correct Cass court file. This source-by-source method preserves the difference between a status notification, an actual departure time, a transfer, parole, and final discharge.
